“I wanted to give my daughter somewhere stable, safe and give her an education in a place where she can thrive.” Sarah is a mum with Learning Disabilities. Her parents moved around a lot and failed to give her an education, but she has fought for her daughter to have one.

The problem is that the system makes it almost impossible for someone like her without help. “When you do get an appointment, you have to wait months. Everyone blames each other and if you can’t fill out the forms, you get nowhere.”

Sarah’s daughter was obviously struggling right at the start of primary school. She was bullied, missing lessons, miserable and even started self-harming before the age of ten. Medical professionals misdiagnosed Sarah’s daughter’s conditions and she was desperate.

“Without CASBA I don’t think I would ever have got Helen an EHC plan. Unless you’ve got someone there when they’re using the fancy jargon it’s hard to know what they’re on about. I knew what I wanted to tell them, but I couldn’t write it down.”

Our advocate supported Sarah in getting Helen the necessary paperwork. Now she has a place at a special school and her mum is so relieved.

“Having a learning need is nothing to be ashamed of. Helen is now around other kids of the same age with all kinds of conditions. She’s got a team behind her and they’re helping her to grow in confidence.”
